St. Patrick’s Day Hikes

Turn your regular hike into a scavenger hunt for gold and leprechauns to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! Fun for the whole family!

Before you begin, make sure the little ones are wearing proper foot gear - hiking boots or shoes, and socks made just for children's feet by top brands like Smartwool or Darn Tough

Depending on your location, shamrocks and clovers, four-leafed or otherwise, might be tough for younger hikers to find. Try looking for other St. Patrick’s Day themed objects like one item (birds, signs, leaves, flowers) in every color of the rainbow!

Have your group keep an eye out for “Blarney Stones”! Collect smooth, palm-sized, stones and take them home to decorate. Paint your rocks with white, green, and orange to make an Irish flag or cover them in gold paint and glitter for your very own Leprechaun gold.

Speaking of which…

If you have time to pre-plan your route, visit ahead of time and leave a trail of gold coins leading the little ones to a leprechaun's pot O’gold! Create this treasure by filling a box or bowl with St. Patrick’s Day inspired books and healthy snacks for the young ones and leaving it at the end of your hike. You could even add a rainbow by using multicolored streamers. (Don’t forget to clean up when you’re done!)

Story Hike

If your hikers aren’t interested in any scavenger hunts or decorating, try telling them a St. Patrick’s Day story before the hike. Try one of these St. Patrick’s Day books for kids: How to Catch a Leprechaun (Adam Wallace), Clever Tom and the Leprechaun (Linda Shute), or Leprechaun on the Loose (Marcia Jones).

A hike is a great place for imaginative play, so use the stories as a starting point to really get their imaginations going! Take plenty of water on your outing and if gold chocolate coins aren’t your thing, end the hike with some St. Patrick’s Day treats, like green apples, broccoli, green peppers, or kale chips!
