Layering Basics
Layering your clothing correctly keeps you warm and comfortable so you can stay outside longer. If you get too warm or too cold, you simply take off or add a layer and you're good to go!
As a general guide, here's what each layer is for:
- Base layer (against your skin) manages moisture.
- Mid layer keeps you warm and protects you from the cold.
- Outer layer (or outer shell) shields and protects you from the weather (wind, rain, snow).
Smartwool Base Layers
Your base layer or next-to-skin layer’s job is to manage moisture and regulate your core body temperature by moving moisture away from your skin.
Smartwool’s Merino wool base layers are quick-drying and will wick sweat and moisture away from your skin so you can keep dry! This helps you maintain a cool body temperature in the summer and provides warmth in the winter, and they offer a few different options: Merino 150, Merino 250, and SmartLoft insulation.
Merino 150
Smartwool Merino 150 base layers are lightweight, breathable, year-round pieces for when you’re on the move in warmer weather. The 150 weight fabric means there are 150 grams per square meter, so these base layers will be a bit thinner than the Merino 250’s, which are 250 grams per square meter.
What’s so great about Merino 150?
Merino 150 base layers can work undercover as a base layer on cooler mornings and a stand-alone piece during warmer weather. They feature Core Spun technology to ensure you get the temperature regulation and moisture management benefits of soft Merino wool, which is wrapped around a nylon core for added durability and optimum comfort.
Smartwool uses a jersey stitch for these garments, which is a universal knit stitch that is very stable and offers easy care with a flat finish that doesn’t snag! Merino 150 garments include mild weather base layer tops and bottoms, casual tops, and accessories.
Men's Merino 150 Base Layer Micro Stripe Short Sleeve (and Women) - $75.00

The year-round Merino 150 baselayer short sleeve is up to the challenge thanks to the body temp regulating properties and breathability of Merino. Featuring Core Spun technology, Smartwool wrapped Merino around a nylon core for added durability while still keeping the comfort of ultra-soft Merino next to skin. Smartwool added smooth flatlock seams to help minimize chafing and offset shoulder and side seams to lie smoothly beneath pack straps. Performs well on its own in warmer temps or layers up easily when cooler weather rolls in.

A year-round favorite, Smartwool Merino 150 Baselayer Bottoms work hard to keep you comfortable everywhere from the ski hill to the campsite. Featuring Core Spun technology, Smartwool wrapped Merino around a nylon core for added durability while still keeping the comfort of ultra-soft Merino next to skin.
Merino 250
Smartwool’s Merino 250 base layers are a warmer weight, ideal for cold weather and stop and go winter activities like skiing.
What’s so great about Merino 250?
Merino 250 layers are the core of Smartwool’s layering system. Technically long underwear, these base layers feature chafe-free seam constructions and are made with 100% sustainably sourced soft Merino wool that wicks moisture away and naturally resists odor. They are form-fitting for easy layering and use an interlock knit that looks like latticework for warmth and loft without any bulk.
Smartwool’s Merino 250 base layers include bottoms, tops, hoodies and cold weather accessories like beanies and gloves.
