About Spartan Race and Tough Mudder
While Spartan Race and Tough Mudder are races, the goal for most people is not how fast they can cross the finish line. Instead, it's about pushing yourself, both mentally and physically, and getting out of your comfort zone.
Spartan Race has three Race options: the Spartan Sprint which is 3 miles of obstacles, the Spartan Super and/or Spartan Beast, which range from 8-14 miles with nearly 3 dozen obstacles. Tough Mudder is 10 miles of mud and 20+ (team-oriented) obstacles.
You can participate in both races either as a single runner or with a team. Of course, if you do choose to enter as a team you will also get the benefit of having your teammates push you to do your very best (although every runner seems to be equally supportive and encouraging to everyone in the race). If you choose to enter as a single runner, you will no doubt test and improve your mental strength.
Both races feature obstacles such as wall climbing, fire jumping, crawling under barbed wire, tractor pulling, rope climbing, plus a few surprises. These strenuous activities will take their toll on your mind, body (and feet).
About the Socks
Don't put your feet through more hell than necessary! Make sure you're wearing high-quality, durable, breathable running socks. Socks made from merino wool and other moisture-wicking fibers are perfect for managing moisture and protecting your feet while you’re working hard.
Stay away from cotton! Cotton retains moisture and if you’re going to be in the wet mud, your feet are going to need all the help your socks can give in order to be comfortable. It's important to make sure your socks also fit snugly to help prevent mud and gunk from getting into them and soaking your feet.
Most runners and athletes swear by compression socks. Knee-high compression socks will not only help your legs feel better by preventing calf cramps, but they will also act as a layer of protection against scratchy vegetation, an added bonus.
If you don’t like compression (we suggest you give it a try), or think knee-high socks might become annoying and distract you from the obstacles, don’t worry, we have some sock ideas for you too.
It’s important to note that no show socks tend to slip down into your shoe, which takes time to fix and can lead to blisters, something you don’t want to mess with during a race. Most of these socks will be at least a quarter crew in height.
