]]>Merino wool keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The fibers have a natural crimping pattern to them, which helps insulate your feet instead of trapping in your body heat. The crimped fibers also act as a buffer between your skin and the cold air. As for warm weather, the Merino fibers absorb moisture and pull it away from your skin to cool you down faster.
Did you know that Merino wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight without feeling wet? That’s almost unheard of when it comes to socks! It is also breathable and antimicrobial. The breathability of the fabric makes you sweat less and keeps your skin dry, so you won’t have to worry about irritation or blisters! Merino fibers fight against bacteria too, so you can say goodbye to potential odors or infections. In addition to being breathable, the fabric is also elastic. So, socks made with Merino wool are stretchy and comfortable, but also return to their original size.
Some more awesome benefits of Merino wool are that it is naturally UV-protecting, anti-wrinkle, anti-static, stain-resistant, quick-drying, durable, flameproof (don’t test that benefit, just take our word for it), and biodegradable on its own! Seriously, what’s not to love about Merino wool?!
To keep your Merino wool socks looking fresh and long-lasting, there are some special steps to take while washing them. Don’t worry, it’s super easy. Just turn them inside out when you’re ready to wash them, and machine wash on the gentle cycle in either warm or cool water. Don’t use bleach or fabric softener, stick with your regular detergent. After they’re washed, you can either tumble dry on low or hang to dry! Easy peasy.
To store your socks, keep them lying flat in your sock drawer. Avoid folding or balling them up because it can distort their shape. If you wear your Merino wool socks year-round, that’s all there is to storing them! But if you need to store them long-term, keep them in plastic bags or boxes. If it’s been a year or more since your socks have seen the world, air them out since plastic doesn’t allow them to breathe. Another tip is to store your socks with a piece of cedar wood to keep moths and other critters away from your precious Merino wool!
A blog about Merino wool wouldn’t be complete without a list of our favorite Merino wool socks! Here are some of our top picks:

]]>When you hear about yoga, you probably assume you have to twist yourself into a pretzel to do it. That's actually not the case! Yoga is an ancient practice that can be traced back to over 5,000 years ago in northern India, and it combines body poses with meditation and deep breathing to achieve alignment within your mind, body, and spirit. Yoga has such a rich history, and there are many different types and philosophies of yoga, so anyone can get started regardless of skill level. If you're interested in learning more about the history of yoga, check out this article!
There are several reasons and benefits to practicing yoga in general, but especially during the wintertime. First, it gets your body moving and warms up your muscles, which is great for those chilly winter mornings. Yoga can also provide mental clarity and higher energy levels, and we need all the energy we can get when it gets dark at 5pm. It can also boost your mood and reduce stress levels, and you deserve some sort of sunshine during a gloomy day! You can learn more about the different physical and mental benefits of yoga here.
If you think you need to buy a bunch of fancy yoga gear to get started, think again! All you truly need is a yoga mat. But it doesn't hurt to have some other equipment to help you out, like comfy yoga pants and cozy socks you won't slip in. Here are some of our recommendations:
This yoga mat from Amazon has everything you could want! It is made with textured foam to help with traction, plus it comes in a bunch of assorted colors and has a shoulder strap for easy transport from your closet to your living room (or from home to the yoga studio if you're brave enough to go out in the cold).
Some people like to practice yoga barefoot, and some people prefer to wear yoga socks. We fully endorse wearing socks and recommend these Smartwool ones! These socks are lightweight and breathable with a supportive arch brace to keep you cool and comfortable during your routine.
Yoga blocks are super helpful for anyone who practices yoga, but especially for beginners! You can use them for stability while doing certain poses, you can sit on them during a meditation exercise, or you can utilize them for stretching.
These Smartwool leggings are the perfect stretchy, breathable pants you need while doing yoga. They are made with a 4-way stretch fabric, plus a Merino 150 lined waistband to help with sweat-wicking.
Nobody wants to wear a tank top or t-shirt when the temps are this low, so how about a Smartwool quarter zip instead? This one is super lightweight, so you won't get too hot during your yoga flow, and it is super stretchy, so it won't limit your range of motion.
These multi-purpose muscle roller balls are a must if you struggle with muscle pain or want to relieve some pressure points. You can heat them in your microwave to help relieve muscle tension, you can use them for a deep tissue massage to help eliminate muscle knots, and they are becoming increasingly popular in Yin and Yamuna yoga.
Now that you have everything you need to begin your yoga journey, it's time to actually start doing some yoga! There are several different options to do yoga in the winter.
If you're brave enough to leave your house and trek through the ice and snow, then going to a yoga class is probably a good option for you! Yoga studios and gyms offering yoga classes are becoming more common, so a quick search of "yoga near me" should do the trick. Some studios let you try your first class for free, or you can sometimes find some great deals for yoga classes on Groupon!
We personally like to avoid going out in the chilly winter weather at all costs, and if you're like us, then practicing yoga at home is more your vibe. All you need is your phone or laptop, and the possibilities are endless. YouTube is a great resource for doing yoga at home- there are thousands of videos for every skill level and every type of yoga. Yoga with Adriene is an extremely popular channel with playlists for different focuses and even timed sessions.
If you want to do yoga at home but following along with a video isn't your thing, you can also go online and create your own yoga flow! Tummee.com is a great resource where you can sort through hundreds of poses and either follow one of their pre-made flows or create your own if you're feeling bold! The nice thing about this website is that they have pictures and descriptions of each pose and how to do it, and it's so easy to drag and drop each pose to create your own sequence.
Yoga is a great winter activity to help you stay active during the dreary winter months. Whether you sign up for classes or follow along with videos at home, we hope you start enjoying yoga!

]]>Happy new year! With every new year comes new year’s resolutions, which usually get forgotten about a month later. Keep reading along to find out how you can stick to your fitness resolutions and set yourself up for success this year!
It’s very easy to set broad goals for yourself, such as “lose weight” or “eat better,” but those vague goals will do more harm than good. Set some more specific resolutions, such as “eat one vegetable with every meal,” or “go to the gym three times a week,” to ensure better success. Ask yourself questions about why a particular goal is important to you and what your desired outcomes are to help narrow it down to be as specific and achievable as possible.
Spreading yourself too thin by trying to achieve a laundry list of goals will set you up for failure. Pick one or two main goals to focus on throughout the year so it is easier for you to manage and hold yourself accountable. You can even make a longer resolution list and determine which ones are the most important to you (and save the others for next year!)
Just like having broad goals or too many goals, having too big of goals might not be successful either. Aim for small steps that ease into your fitness goals, especially at the start. For example, instead of trying to push yourself to hit the gym every single day, you can start smaller by setting a goal of going three times a week. This strategy will help get you closer to your full goals without overwhelming yourself or burning out. Small goals can also help you achieve success sooner and give you confidence, and you can always adjust those big goals as time goes on.
Having a journal or calendar to keep track of your progress is a good way to keep yourself accountable. Visually seeing your progress can help keep you motivated, and for those days where you’re feeling less motivated, it can help you to see how far you’ve come and spark your drive again. For a more comprehensive progress tracker, try recording how you feel each day, or try doing a written reflection at the beginning and end of each week. Allowing yourself this space notice how you feel can help you adjust your goals over time based on changes you noticed.
An inspiration board can help you to visualize your goals, as well as help with decreased motivation as the year goes on. You can create a collage with pictures online or go old-school by cutting up magazine pictures and pasting them on a board or piece of paper. Your inspiration board should contain things that are important to you and related to your resolutions. You could include motivational quotes, pictures of fitness activities you want to start doing, or even pictures of healthy recipes you want to try. Make sure to display it somewhere you’ll see it daily, like your phone background or on the wall by your door, so you can be inspired and reminded of your goals every day.
Everyone always feels more motivated to hit the gym when you have an outfit that makes you feel good. Start off the year by treating yourself to some upgraded workout clothes to help with that initial push to begin your goals. While shirts and shorts are important, having great socks will also help you feel more motivated and keep your feet feeling (and smelling) good.
The buddy system never fails, and if you have a friend who wants to achieve similar goals as you, buddy up! Working out is always more fun with a friend. Plus, having someone else around is another way to be held accountable to your resolutions.
Change is never easy, and it can be difficult to continue with your resolutions. So, being patient and kind to yourself is a necessity. It’s okay to make some mistakes and even miss some days, they might even help you to succeed in the long run. Remind yourself of why you set these resolutions and remember that change is a marathon, not a sprint!
With these tips in mind, you are set up for success this new year. We’ll be here with great socks to help you stick to those resolutions and ultimately have a great year!

]]>Halloween is such a fun time of year with all the costumes and decorations, but it can definitely get spooky. Read along for our tips and tricks to keep the scaries away and have a fun and safe Halloween!
Making smart choices about your or your child’s Halloween costume can help keep you safe!
Choosing a costume with bright colors can help you be spotted easier and adding reflective tape if you’ll be out when it’s dark can make it even easier.
If you live somewhere where it’s cold during Halloween, you know the struggle of your mom making you wear a jacket and having it totally ruin your costume. But it’s important to keep bundled up when the weather is cold, and make sure your costume is loose enough to fit over warm layers. Feet need to warm too, and we have great socks to warm up anyone’s feet!
Using non-toxic face makeup is a better alternative to wearing a full-face mask that can obstruct your vision, especially if you’re out after dark. And keep the pointy costume props like swords and knives away from the kids!
Now that you have your costume in check, here are some tips for trick-or-treating time!
Always go trick-or-treating in groups! Accompany any kids under 12 and encourage the older trick-or-treaters to go with a group of friends. If your child is trick-or-treating without you, establish a familiar route for them to go around and set a curfew.
Some other advice for making your trick-or-treating rounds: never go inside someone’s house for a treat, always carry a flashlight and a fully charged phone, and only approach well-lit homes.
Even if it upsets your kids, don’t let them eat any candy until you get home so you can inspect it. While the chances of your kid’s candy being filled with something dangerous are pretty low, it’s still important to go through it and get rid of anything that isn’t sealed, has torn packaging, or just looks suspicious.
If you are planning on giving out candy and joining in the Halloween fun, take the extra steps to make sure that other trick-or-treaters are safe too!
Clear the pathway leading up to your house and remove any tripping hazards, like hoses or toys. Rake away any wet leaves and other sidewalk debris.
Make sure your house is well-lit! Replace any burnt-out bulbs and even add any additional light sources if your house still isn’t bright enough.
For all the pet-owners, make sure to keep your furry friend at bay during trick-or-treating time. You don’t want to risk them getting excited and potentially hurting someone, plus you never know if kids are allergic to your pet!
Of course, you’ll need to stock up on candy, but also keep some fun Halloween stickers or pencils on hand for anyone with allergies. We want all trick-or-treaters to feel included and have fun!
We still want to be cautious about spreading germs this Halloween season!
If you or your child are feeling sick come trick-or-treating time, it’s best to stay home and find a different Halloween activity you can do at home, like watching a movie or painting pumpkins.
Bring hand sanitizer with you and use in between each house you stop at and teach little ones to cough or sneeze in their elbow away from others.
Try to encourage social distancing- don't congregate in big groups waiting for your turn at each house, avoid going trick-or-treating with a large group, and try to stick to people within your household or close circle if you can!
With these tips, your Halloween is sure to be filled with more treats than tricks. Happy Halloween!

You’ll need:
First, beat the eggs in a bowl that is big enough to fit a slice of your bread. Once you finish beating the eggs, add the milk, pumpkin puree, pumpkin spice, sugar, and salt, and mix thoroughly. Add a tablespoon of butter to your heated-up camping skillet, and then it’s time to start making the French toast. Dip each side of your bread into the mixture you created, and place it on the skillet. Cook until golden on each side, and enjoy with some maple syrup!
This might technically be a breakfast recipe, but we think it would also be perfect for a campground brunch! A nice warm sandwich with delicious fall flavors- what more could you ask for? Plus, these can be prepped at home before your trip, making cooking on the campsite even easier!
You’ll need:
To start preparing this meal at home before your trip, grate your apple into a bowl and add the juice from your lemon and enough cold water to cover it all. Let that sit for five minutes, then drain and squeeze out the excess water from your apples. In the same bowl, add your pork, maple syrup, spices, and herbs, and mix thoroughly. Separate into 8 portions and form them into small little discs about the size of your English muffins. (Side note: they can be stored in Tupperware for two days, or frozen for up to two months!)
Once you get to the campsite, all you need to do is heat up the sausage patties you made on your griddle for about 2-3 minutes on each side. While your sausage is cooking, cook your eggs and butter your English muffins. Assemble it together and add a slice of Swiss cheese, and enjoy!
For chilly evenings on the campground, warm up with this yummy five can chili recipe, which is super easy to make right on your campsite!
You’ll need:
First, prep your chipotle peppers by slicing them open and removing the seeds. Keep some of the adobo sauce, we’ll use it later! Chop up the chipotles and set them aside. In a dutch oven, heat up your olive oil and add your onions. Once the onions begin to soften, throw in everything else. Cook the chili until thickened to your liking, add your favorite chili toppings like cheese or green onion, and enjoy!
If you’re not bringing trail mix on your camping trip, are you even going camping? Switch up your trail mix for your fall trips with this recipe! This is a recipe you'll want to prep at home ahead of time, so it's all ready to go for your trip.
You’ll need:
A little extra work goes into this trail mix, but it’s worth it! Add all of your nuts to a cast iron skillet on low heat, add your maple syrup and mix to make sure all the nuts are coated. Bring your mixture to a boil, and keep mixing so nothing sticks. Do this for about 3 minutes, then turn the heat off and add the pumpkin spice and salt, and stir. Add it all to a lined baking sheet and let it cool in the fridge for 2 hours. Once 2 hours is up, break up the mixture into bite-sized pieces and add all the dried fruit, and you’re done!
When you think of fall, you think apples, so why not try out this delicious campfire apple crisp? Plus it only takes 20 minutes to make!
You’ll need:
In a bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, flour, and butter until the butter is evenly dispersed. Then, add in your chopped apples, cinnamon, and white sugar and mix. Fold your aluminum foil to make a boat shape, and place your ingredients in the center. Fold the edges of the foil over the top to seal it, and place on a grate over your campfire for 15-20 minutes. And there you have it, a warm and delicious apple crisp!
Now you can get excited for your next camping trip since you have all these delicious recipes to try! If you decide to make one of these dishes on your next fall camping adventure, snap a photo and tag us on Instagram @socksaddictofficial!

]]>Sleeping outdoors has the potential to be an absolutely magical experience that connects you to nature in a whole new way! However, your enjoyment of the evening largely hinges on your preparedness for it. Even if you’re camping out in your backyard, you need to plan ahead.
Now that fall is here, and the weather is getting cooler, it can get pretty chilly when the sun goes down.
If you’re not adequately dressed and equipped for the cold, what should have been a wonderful evening under the stars can quickly become a miserable, regrettable one.
To help you stay warm sleeping outdoors during fall, we’ve compiled a list of simple strategies that will keep your toes toasty and your body snug all night long.
Your head is the one part of your body that a sleeping bag doesn’t shield from the cold. It’s also one of the most vital areas to keep warm, as heat leaves your body predominantly through your head and feet.
A beanie is first prize. But if you don’t have one, then wrap an extra scarf, fleece, or t-shirt around your head when it gets chilly. A hoodie is also an option, just watch those strings!
Don’t forget to ensure that you can still breathe comfortably through the multiple layers and your sleeping bag.
Just like insulating your head helps to stop heat from escaping, keeping your feet warm is another effective method of preserving body heat.
From the afternoon onwards, wear thick socks and shoes that insulate your feet and keep them warm and dry.
Keep your shoes on until the moment before you climb into your sleeping bag to ensure you remain as cozy as possible throughout the night.
If you plan on sleeping outdoors for multiple nights, it’s worth investing in a few pairs of quality socks designed for both comfort and heat retention. No one likes cold feet, and when you’re sleeping outdoors, they are even more unpleasant. Fortunately, a great pair of socks easily remedies this.
At Socks Addict you’ll find a fantastic range of socks to suit your every need. You can keep your feet warm in style with any of our high-quality socks for men, women and children. Frozen feet in fall will be a thing of the past!
It’s important to remember that it's much easier to maintain a certain level of warmth than it is to attain it.
It can be challenging to warm up outdoors once you are already cold. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you change into your warmest clothes while the sun is still up, and your temperature is still comfortable. Set up your sleeping arrangement in the sunlight to minimize unnecessary admin once it gets dark and cold.
A hot water bottle is truly the greatest companion on any outdoor sleeping adventure. If you have a small pot and a camping stove, then it’s certainly worth boiling some water right before you go to sleep and tucking the hot water bottle into your sleeping bag.
If, however, you cannot bring a hot water bottle on your trip, then there are alternate solutions. You can fill an empty plastic bottle with moderately warm—not boiling water—and use this as a make-shift hot water bottle for the evening.
It’s important to note that most of your heat escapes through the surface that you sleep on—not just into the cold air above you.
When you’re sleeping outdoors, you don’t have the comfort, luxury, or insulation that your usual mattress offers. However, you can increase the warmth factor by laying down an inflatable hiking mattress or putting a yoga mat on a towel. This will minimize heat loss throughout the night, while also maximizing comfort.
It’s also important to carefully choose the surface you sleep on. While grass is comfortable, it will attract condensation throughout the night—making for a cold and wet morning. Sand, on the other hand, is not necessarily as comfortable, but it’s generally a lot warmer and less prone to damp.
Any moisture will condense under cold conditions. Once it’s condensed, temperatures decrease. If this condensation forms under your sleeping area, or drips on your head or sleeping bag, you’ll likely feel very cold, very quickly!
To avoid this chilly surprise, don’t sleep on vegetation without some form of ground cover to protect you. It might also be worth placing a plastic covering over your sleeping bag to prevent any moisture from seeping in.
Take a break from your busy schedule and enjoy a night under the stars! Fall is a fabulous time to sleep outdoors and the crisp night air makes it feel extra refreshing. Add a pair of socks that keep you warm from top to toe, a cup of cocoa, and some s’mores and it’s even better.

Making a list in advance will ensure that you have ample time to buy or borrow whatever you need for your first camping trip. Don’t know where to start with your list? Check out this awesome checklist that will help you keep track of everything you need to bring for your first camping adventure. Don’t forget to pack your hiking socks, casual socks, and of course, some warm and cozy socks for those chilly nights. Happy packing!
Next step is finding where your camping trip will be! You can choose between local and state parks, or a national park if you’re feeling a little more adventurous. If you need some extra guidance to booking your national park trip, go on Recreation.gov to reserve your spot. Most spots get released for booking up to six months in advance, so you can plan ahead! Campendium.com is also a great site to find a campsite, plus it has tons of camper reviews and photos! And if you want a campsite that’s more private, you can scroll through campsite listings on Hipcamp.com, which has private landowners renting out campsites or cabins on their land! The possibilities are endless when it comes to planning your first trip, so choose what works best for you and your travel companions. Also, make sure while you’re looking for campsites that you look at the amenities they have, such as fire pits and picnic tables.
Getting to your campsite as early as you can gives you an ample amount of daylight to get all your belongings unpacked and your tent set up. Plus, getting there earlier increases your chances of getting a better campsite or having other people around to help you out if needed. But the best part is that the earlier you get set up and settled in, the earlier you can start exploring! Some campsites might have a specific check-in time, but if they don’t, get there as early as you can.
Here’s the fun part! A lot of campsites will have brochures about different activities in the area you can do, or you can get ahead of the game and Google it before you go! You can go on hikes, explore nature trails, hang out on the beach, and so much more! Some campsites might even have some things you can do on-site, like a sand volleyball court or a nature trail within the site. Make sure you have some comfortable hiking or running socks for hitting the trails and for all your other outdoor adventures. If you’re still looking for some ideas, check out this camping activities guide to keep you having fun!
This might sound more intimidating than it actually is, but don’t worry! Cooking while camping will be smooth sailing if you’re prepared for it. Pick out some easy recipes and buy and prep your ingredients ahead of time so you can enjoy a delicious, low-stress meal around the fire. Remember to include all the kitchen utensils you’ll need on your packing list (refer to tip #1) to cook your campfire meals. Don’t forget to bring classic camping snacks like trail mix, and of course you can’t forget your marshmallows for s’mores!
Make sure the campsite you will be staying at has a fire pit, it will make things much easier if you’re a first-time campfire builder. Gather some firewood (you can either gather your own sticks and logs or getting logs from a general store nearby) and stack the logs inside your fire pit. All that’s left is to light it up and enjoy! For a more detailed step-by-step, check out this fire-building guide. And of course, practice proper campfire safety- make sure the fire is put out before you leave, and only burn things that can be fully burned (do not burn plastic or cans!).
Here's a bonus tip! While there are a lot of steps to take to make sure you have everything you need, all the effort is worth it when you get to be one with nature and having a blast. So don’t forget to take a moment out of the crazy planning and adventure to kick back and enjoy!
Don’t let being a first-time camper stop you! This guide will help you out and turn you into a pro in no time. Happy camping!

Every pair of Smartwool socks is built of sustainable, ethically sourced ZQ-certified Merino wool. Merino wool is better for the environment than many natural and synthetic fibers because Merino is made of amino acids and proteins that help it to break down in water and soil when discarded. Plus, Smartwool’s ZQ-certified Merino wool is farmed from free-range sheep that have access to proper nutrition and clean water and are always handled ethically during the shearing process. Happy, healthy sheep make great Merino wool! They participate in a ZQRX program where they partner with farmers and focus on regenerative agriculture and reducing carbon emissions.
In addition to using Merino wool in most of their styles, Smartwool also has programs to help reduce the amount of textile waste that ends up in landfills. Excess Merino wool scraps are collected from their mills and repurposed into Smartloft insulation. For synthetic fibers like nylon, Smartwool now incorporates a percentage of recycled nylon into every sock in the Classic Hike and performance Hike line. And their efforts don’t stop at their own brand - their Second Cut™ Project allows customers to send clean, used socks of any brand and material to Smartwool so they can be recycled into new products like dog beds.
Here are a couple of our favorite casual Smartwool styles:
Darn Tough creates a more sustainable product by designing all their socks for ultimate durability, so you’re not buying socks time after time and contributing to textile waste. In addition, their wool styles adhere to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), a standard that has guidelines in place to maintain sustainable farm and land practices, supply chain traceability, and protect animal welfare. They also use FSC-certified recycled paper made with water-soluble glues and vegetable-based inks in their product packaging.
Here are a couple of our favorite everyday Darn Tough styles:
Farm to Feet’s biggest sustainability initiative is their 100% American supply chain. They lessen their carbon footprint by sourcing wool from U.S. farmers and implementing sustainable U.S.-factory practices. They also minimize environmental impact from chemical usage with a bluesign® system, use FSC-certified paper in 91% of their packaging, and have a textile recycling program.
Farm to Feet also has ties to several conservation programs. They are a member of the Conservation Alliance, a program that protects natural habitat and recreation areas with grants, political advocacy, and the Public Lands Defense Fund. They are also affiliated with location-based organizations like the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, Pacific Crest Trail Association, and the Continental Divide Trail Coalition.
Here are a couple of our favorite Farm to Feet hiking styles:
Like many of the brands in this article, Fox River also crafts their socks from sustainable fibers like Merino wool, a natural eucalyptus cellulosic fiber called TENCEL®, cotton, silk, and wool. These socks are made in factories that have several green features like energy efficient lighting, custom air exchange systems, green washing machines, packing equipment, and more. They use less wasteful materials like plastic wrapping and have a robust recycling program that keeps factory material like packaging, oil, and steel waste out of landfills. Their yarn waste is even reused as eco-fiberfill for products like car trunk liners!
Here are a couple of our favorite Fox River tactical styles:
Drymax’s approach to sustainability is in their sock construction. They use a solution dye process that produces fibers that require less energy than other traditional dying processes and produces no dye waste. Their filament fibers are also longer, stronger fibers that last and do not easily shed. By creating a longer lasting sock, there are less socks in landfills. Drymax also skips the fabric softener process which allows the socks to perform better. Their fabric softener free approach combined with lower shedding socks from filament fibers creates less laundry fiber pollution in our oceans and waterways.

Extra cushioning in your socks helps to keep feet safe during strenuous activities. Long periods of exercise are some of the most important times to use cushioned socks, as they protect feet from wear and tear. Cushioned socks help to maintain good foot health and are vital for runners, hikers, or athletes that want to prevent injury from impact, friction, or foot swelling. Many ankle, shin, and achilles injuries are preventable with the use of cushioned socks, as the extra fibers in the socks help to absorb some of the impact during high-intensity activities. Think of cushioned socks like the race tires of performance socks! They are durable and made for high-intensity activities, like racing tires for a car. Whereas non-cushioned socks are more prone to wear and tear, like bald tires. Aim to keep your performance up with cushioned socks!
On top of keeping your feet protected, cushioned socks can also help with temperature regulation. One of the benefits of cushioned socks is that they can keep you warm in cooler temperatures. However, you can also find cushioned socks that will suit any climate. For warmer months, look for a cushioned sock made with Merino wool. Many cushioned socks with Merino wool not only keep your feet safe from impact, but also ensure that your feet stay cool, moisture free, and prevent bacteria that can lead to uncomfortable blisters and even conditions like athlete’s foot. Plus, you'll also enjoy added comfort from the Merino's soft, breathable material. We know that there are so many kinds of cushioned socks to choose from, so we're here to help you choose the best option to keep you running longer.
If you find that your feet are always sore or are full of blisters after hitting the gym, running, or after a game, it might be time to consider wearing cushioned socks.
We carry a wide range of socks with strategically cushioned zones so your feet are protected in the areas that receive the most impact during strenuous physical activity, such as the pads and heels of your feet. Socks are the only barrier between your foot and shoe, so why not consider a cushioned sock to combat the constant friction and motion during sports and activities? Cushioned socks will reduce the wear and tear on your feet, preventing blisters and calluses.
Here are a few high-quality cushioned socks that will keep your feet protected while working out!
This sock’s medium cushion is in the toe, heel, and achilles and assists with impact control and adds blister protection. Plus, its Arch Support technology enhances mobility and fights mid-foot fatigue. Even though this sock is cushioned, you won’t be too hot! The vented top panel and bottom WickLink Channels remove moisture and allow the foot to breath. The Microban conditioning treatment on this sock will allow you to maintain foot health with its anti-bacterial protection. Also available in ¼ crew and crew lengths.
Light Cushioning nirvana. With half the wool yarn weight of cushion socks, lightweight cushion socks deliver lightweight performance with the perfect amount of cushioning along the base of your foot. Runners and cyclists love it's streamlined performance fit while 17.2-micron wool brings home the goods in the comfort department. Fine gauge Merino Wool makes this a fast drying and breathable "all-weather" sock that stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This Smartwool sock has years of testing and proves to be an elite women's running sock. It features targeted cushioning in both the ball and heel of the sock, ensuring there is shock absorption with a seamless feel. Its Indestructawool™ Technology gives this sock the ultimate durability and comfort. The Thorlos Experia series socks are great for runners who are prone to blisters, foot pain, or discomfort. This sock is specifically engineered to deliver maximum protection and comfort in the critical strike zones on the foot, like the ball and heel. They have a unique minimalistic padding that is specifically engineered for relieving stress of impact, while also being a lightweight aerodynamic sock.
Hiking socks are just as essential as a good pair of strong hiking boots! When hiking up and down hill, there is a lot of pressure applied to many different parts of the foot. Athlete's foot is a contagious fungal infection that affects the skin on feet. It is caused by a fungus called tinea and occurs when the fungus grows on the feet. It is often caused by excess moisture and warmth within the shoe. Since the fungus thrives in warm, moist environments, it is commonly spread in showers, on locker room floors, around swimming pools, and even on towels or clothing. You should be aware of areas where fungal growth is most common, as you can catch the fungus through direct contact with an infected person or by touching surfaces contaminated with it.
Athlete’s foot can cause pain and discomfort during your favorite activities. Symptoms of this condition may include a scaly rash, blisters around the sole or toe, itching, burning, and stinging. Although athlete’s foot isn't considered a very serious condition, it's sometimes hard to cure. Most cases of athlete's foot do require treatment, and since the condition is contagious, infection can easily reoccur or spread to hand or groin areas. So, it is important take preventative measures against athlete's foot by keeping your feet dry and moisture free! However, if you find yourself with a case of athlete's foot, one home remedy to treat athlete's foot is to use tea tree oil, which is known to reduce itching, scaling, swelling, and burning.

Liner socks are a thinner type of sock that are usually made of material that encourages moisture to be wicked away from the skin. They work much like any base layer garment does by wicking sweat up to the next layer of clothing. So, usually, you use a liner sock underneath a thicker “outer” sock; the lightweight, moisture-wicking liner will draw the moisture away from the foot and pass it to the outer sock where the moisture can evaporate. By reducing the amount of moisture against your skin, you are less likely to have uncomfortable rubbing, which can lead to blisters.
Sock liners are usually made of thin polyester, nylon, lightweight wool, or other natural or synthetic fiber blends that help wick sweat away from your feet. Wool sock liners are one of the most popular liners because wool fibers are known for their temperature regulating properties. So wool sock liners can keep your feet cool in the summer and warm in the winter! While wool is great for regulating temperature, other fibers can be more breathable and quick drying. For example, polyester is quick drying, while nylon is lightweight, strong and can absorb more moisture than other fibers.
No matter which material the liner sock is made of, you’ll always want one that is as thin as possible. The thinner the liner sock, the more comfortable it will be to wear under your outer sock. Contrary to what you may be used to looking for in other outer socks, remember you won’t be sacrificing any performance by getting a thin liner sock. Liner socks are meant to be thin!
Regardless of the time of year, a liner sock is sure to wick away moisture, dry fast, and have great anti-blister qualities. This is why some people in warmer climates use liner socks as their go-to lightweight style! While liner socks are designed to be worn underneath an outer sock, their amazing cooling capabilities make them a great performance sock option all on their own.
However, the real purpose behind liner socks is to reduce blisters when your outer sock is intended for other things, like keeping your feet warm. Liner socks are popular options for cold-weather sports like hockey, snowboarding, and skiing. Because those activities generally require the outer layer to be warm and protective against snowy conditions, adding a liner sock underneath can be great for wicking away sweat and reducing the chance of blisters. Plus, an added benefit is that liner socks help to keep your outer socks in place when you can’t reach down to fix them during these types of high-intensity activities.
Liners are also great for hiking and backpacking treks when you can’t always be sure what the weather will be like. By applying the tried-and-true concept of layering to your feet, you increase the range of comfortable temperatures. You’ll also reduce the chance of rubbing from your hiking boots, which will help to reduce blisters.
Now that you’re clued in on liner socks, here are some of our favorite styles!
The Wigwam CoolMax Liner Crew Socks are perfect for warm weather, spring or summer hikes. CoolMax polyester fibers ensure that moisture is quickly removed from your foot and out to your outer, primary sock.
This ultra-light, non-cushioned sock provides a close, lightweight fit that acts as your second skin to minimize friction and blisters. The flat knit toe seam guarantees comfort.
The Fox River Wick Dry Coolmax Liner Crew Socks are ultra-lightweight liners that feature Fox River's Wick Dry technology, keeping your feet dry and blister-free.
The Fox River Wick Dry Alturas Liner Tube Socks are ultra-lightweight, heat-retaining liners that feature Fox River's Wick Dry technology, keeping your feet dry and blister-free.
The Fox River X-Static Liner Crew Socks are ultra-lightweight liners that feature X-STATIC fabric, which helps eliminate odor with an antimicrobial silver treatment. The silver-coated nylon also minimizes static and regulates temperature, and maintains its effectiveness even after washing. The X-Static liner can even be worn as a primary sock when an ultra-thin, lightweight sock is required. This soft, inner liner can move with your feet without bunching, which prevents those blisters that would otherwise crop up when hot spots constantly rub up against a thick sock that doesn't move.
The X-Static Liner is also available in an over the calf (Knee High) length, and in an ultra light weight in over the calf and crew.
The Injinji 2.0 Toesock Liner provides an extremely thin 5-toe protective base layer to compliment your favorite outer layer sock.
If you’re the type of person that prefers working out at the gym or with a fitness class, find an open facility in your area. There are many gyms and fitness centers that are open and abiding by health and safety guidelines. Many facilities are taking extra steps to clean equipment, encouraging guests to keep socially distant by spacing out equipment and reducing class sizes, and requiring guests to wear a mask while they work out. If you feel safe at your favorite facility and don’t mind working out with a mask on, this could be an option for you!
You may think that you can’t get in a good workout at home without fancy equipment like a treadmill or exercise bike. However, if you’re looking for no-equipment cardio exercises, you should look online! There are many apps and websites that offer virtual training programs and classes. Some traditionally in-person facilities are still offering virtual classes, too. You can even check social apps like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram for cardio workout classes and routine inspiration! HIIT, kickboxing, barre, and dance cardio classes like Zumba are great options to get your heart rate up without the need for cardio equipment.
If you’re more interested in weight training this year, you can order an inexpensive set of weights online. If you’re just starting out, you’ll probably only need a few dumbbells or kettlebells in smaller weight increments. No need to rush out and buy a large, expensive set! Try a set of 10-, 15-, and 20-pound dumbbells or kettlebells. These weights are very versatile and will allow you to practice weight training with little restrictions. If you don’t want to invest in new equipment, get creative with what is already in your home! Books, cans or bags of food, and backpacks filled with a variety of items can all be used as weights when in a pinch.
Get in a great sweat and enjoy the fresh air in the great outdoors! The options for outdoor workouts vary depending on the climate that you live in. For those who live in colder climates, you can still run or hike outside with proper equipment! Be sure to dress in non-cotton layers so you can keep your temperature regulated. If it’s slippery outside, invest in a pair of shoes that are specifically made for outdoor use, like trail running shoes. If it’s snowy where you live, cross country skiing and snowshoeing are great outdoor cardio activities that can be done in the snow! Check around your area for cross country skiing trails or resorts where you can rent equipment and learn the basics.
In warmer areas, some fitness centers are offering their normal classes in outdoor spaces. Check your local fitness centers to see if this option is available. Hiking is a great form of outdoor exercise as well! Check out local trails and park websites before visiting to be sure they’re open this season before heading out. Be sure to also bring a mask and stay 6 feet apart from others as you enjoy the fresh air!
No matter how you’re conquering your fitness goals this year, you’ll need socks that can support you! Here are some of our top performance sock picks for 2021:
This year, we're all at home and things may look a little different this holiday season. Whether you're hosting a small, safe gathering or you're celebrating with loved ones via Facetime or Zoom, we're here to help bring joy into your home this year. We've got cozy decoration ideas, tips for hosting a small gathering, and virtual holiday celebration suggestions, all wrapped up in this article.
Just because no one is coming over doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some festive décor!
One way to decorate during the holidays is with natural looking decorations like garland on the stair railings and mantel, poinsettias for the dining room, or holly wreaths for the doors. This year, see if you're able to get fresh decorations delivered from a local nursery – no contact delivery and supporting a local business? Win-win! If fresh isn’t your thing, faux decorations dug out from storage will do the trick too.
Looking for a twist on the same old decorations you pull out of the attic every year? There are lots of ways to make new holiday decorations with items that you probably already have lying around the house! This year, dried citrus garland is a popular DIY and it’s super easy to make! All you need is your oven, some parchment paper, and any kind of citrus fruit. Another fun DIY decoration idea is salt dough ornaments – this one is great for families with kids! These ornaments only require three ingredients: flour, salt, and water, and they can be cut out easily with cookie cutters. You also may need some craft supplies like glitter or paint to add some flare to your ornaments, and Mod Podge if you’re looking to keep them for years to come.
What is cozier than the soft twinkling of lights in the evening? Whether you celebrate by decorating a tree or by lighting holiday candles, the warm glow of lights can uplift your mood and get you in the holiday spirit. One great way to bring even more twinkly lights into your home is to line your doorways, windowsills, or stair railings with LED string lights. If you’re more into the natural flicker of candlelight, there is nothing better than lighting your favorite seasonal candle and wrapping up in a big blanket on the couch with a good book or to watch your latest Netflix obsession.
If you plan on hosting an in-person celebration this year, it is most likely smaller than holidays in the past. Since this year’s gatherings will be smaller, you’ll need to plan accordingly – especially when it comes to food! You can avoid weeks of leftovers by adjusting the portion sizes of your traditional holiday recipes.
Many people won’t be seeing extended families this year. On top of missing out on the company of loved ones, you’re also missing out on their wonderful home-cooked dishes! After all, what is Christmas dinner without Aunt Sally’s infamous casserole or Cousin Jake’s pie? Try asking for your favorite holiday recipes from family members that you won’t see this year. They'll probably be happy to pass down the recipe and you’ll have the comfort and familiarity of their signature dish at your small gathering this year.
No matter who you’re hosting this year, you can still celebrate with spirits! There are so many holiday cocktail ideas out there, but you’ll need the proper tools to make them. You’re sure to impress your guests with drinks made with this Craft Bar Set from A Bar Above. This set includes a two-piece shaker, a strainer, and a Jigger. All pieces are made with food-grade stainless steel and are dishwasher safe, so cleanup is easy!
For some, home isn’t close to loved ones. Or maybe you aren’t seeing extended family to keep everyone safe and well this year. Regardless of the reasoning, a virtual holiday celebration is in store for many this holiday season. Just because you’re not gathering in person doesn’t mean your traditions are lost! Try some of these virtual or socially distanced adaptations of popular holiday traditions.
If your holiday gathering is usually centered around Secret Santa or White Elephant, you don't have to give it up! Try a service like Elfster, or have someone gather names and randomly assign them to other people. Then once everyone’s gifts arrive, have a virtual party where everyone opens their gifts together!
Maybe you’re already planning a virtual holiday celebration, but you think there should be some sort of structure or activity for everyone to focus on. Contests are a fun way to make everyone feel included and give you all something to share and talk about! You could organize a holiday pajama contest or holiday decoration contest. Everyone would show their outfit or decorations on screen and you could send the winner a prize! If you’re less into structure and competition, you could organize a cookie decorating party. This will give your virtual party the feel of an in-person holiday, as everyone can have casual conversation or tell stories while decorating their cookies. Just be sure to tell your guests to have cookies and decorating supplies ready or deliver the supplies to them before the party as a fun surprise!
There’s no doubt about it, exchanging gifts is difficult this year. Since you might not be able to see everyone in person this year, ship the gift straight to your loved one while you’re shopping online. You could also put together a care package containing many gifts, big or small, and ship that to anyone on your list. If your loved ones are close by, you could still wrap their gifts and leave them on their porch. However your gifts are arriving this year, you can still open gifts together over a video call. If you’re concerned about gifts arriving on time, send them an e-gift card and let them choose their own gift in the new year.
However and wherever you’re celebrating this holiday season, we wish you peace and wellness. Happy Holidays, from your friends at Socks Addict.

As you've probably noticed, socks come in various lengths. Sock length does not refer to the main body of the sock (where your foot goes) - that’s sizing. Length refers to the shaft of the sock (how far the sock goes up your leg). The most common lengths for socks are hidden, no show, 1/4 crew, crew, and knee high. Some brands have specific names for these lengths, so keep an eye out for any differentiation. Sock length varies for many reasons such as wearer fashion preference, weather and debris protection, and even blister protection.
But which lengths are best for preventing ankle rubbing? 1/4 crew, crew, and knee high socks have built-in ankle protection, as the fabric of the sock continues up past where your shoe would meet the skin. If you’re having problems with stopping your boots from rubbing your ankles, try boot length socks that are slightly taller than the standard crew. However, the main culprits for causing raw, blistered ankles are hidden and no show lengths, as these socks are shorter and meant to be mostly or completely hidden by the shoes.
If you're a no show sock wearer, keep an eye out for socks that have extra fabric, often called tabs, on the back of the sock cuff. Tabbed no show socks will help keep your ankle free of blisters from rubbing shoes and will also help keep your sock up! Here are some of our favorite tabbed socks:
If you’re a fan of hidden length socks, look for styles that have heel grippers built in. This will help keep your hidden socks in place around your heel, and not crunched up at the toe of your shoe. Plus, when your sock stays in place around your heel, you’re more likely to have that little bit of protection against ankle-rubbing from the fabric staying in place. Check out these hidden sock options:
Fabric weight refers to the way the sock was knitted, and often allows you to gauge the warmth and padding level of a sock. Generally, the lighter the fabric weight, the less protection it will offer. However, lighter knits, like ultra light and light, can come in handy when trying to avoid ankle rubbing, as they provide a close fit and will cause less friction between your skin and the sock. Medium, heavy, and extra heavy weight socks provide great cushioning between your skin and the shoe - but watch out, because heavier weights can lead to hotter feet, which could cause rubbing and blistering.
It’s all about finding the right weight for your day! A medium to heavy cushion prevents ankle rubbing on a lower activity day, while an ultralight or light sock will minimize blistering and rubbing during more active times like while exercising, walking a lot, or running. When shopping for socks, be sure to filter by the weight that works best for you!
When it comes to material, we have one main tip to help you avoid uncomfortable ankle rubbing – stay away from cotton! While cotton socks are popular, they are not built for wicking moisture which makes them a poor barrier between your skin and shoe. Moisture filled socks = high chance for blisters and uncomfortable rubbing , even on the ankle! As with weight, you can filter the socks you’re shopping for by fabric so you can find the best one for you!
No matter what type of shoe you’re wearing, your sock choice can prevent ankle rubbing! Remember, it’s best to switch up your socks based on which shoes you’re wearing to prevent uncomfortable ankle rubbing. By using the information in this article, you can have happy, comfortable ankles!
